Condition

Sciatica & Slipped Disc

Pain that travels from the lower back into the leg or buttock, often with tingling or numbness.

Sciatica usually means the nerve being irritated as it leaves the lower spine. People describe a sharp, burning or electric feeling that runs down the leg, sometimes with pins and needles or a feeling of weakness. It often follows lifting, a sudden twist, long hours of sitting or bending forward.

Most cases improve with the right combination of pain relief, activity modification and progressive physiotherapy — but the pattern of symptoms matters, so an assessment is important before exercises are prescribed.

How physiotherapy can help

Where there is no medical emergency, the usual physiotherapy approach includes manual therapy and traction or spinal decompression where appropriate, nerve-friendly positions for rest, and a graded return to movement and strength.

Some symptoms need urgent medical attention: severe or rapidly worsening weakness, numbness around the groin, or loss of bladder or bowel control. If you have these, seek emergency care immediately rather than waiting for a physiotherapy appointment.
